79 Alfred Street is the Hudson–Evans House. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973. Two of the most recognized names in Detroit history lived under this roof.

1872 – 1873
Built for Philo Wright
French Second Empire with Italianate influence. Three stories of red brick on a rough-cut stone foundation, two-story bay windows on both elevations, and a mansard roof laid in patterned colored slate.
1882
A wedding gift to Grace Whitney Evans
Daughter of the lumber baron, David Whitney Jr. She became the first president of Detroit's YWCA. Her brother, David C. Whitney, bought 82 Alfred directly across the street in 1893, and went on to build the David Whitney Building on Woodward.
1894 – 1904
Home of Joseph Lowthian Hudson
Founder of the J.L. Hudson Company. His flagship store on Woodward was once the tallest department store in the world. Bedrock is building Hudson’s Detroit on that same footprint today.
